William Monahan Tackling Sin City 2 Script

HollywoodReporter says that things might be moving forward after all on Robert Rodriguez's Sin City 2. Screenwriter William Monahan (Departed, Kingdom of Heaven) has been hired to make a contribution to the film's script which had been originally completed by Frank Miller himself. Robert during press for Spy Kids 4 revealed that the sequel could start shooting as early as the fall. I'm still hesitant for more Sin City films now that six years has past and the high quality of the original. It's hard to believe it could be improved upon or even be as good.

RUMOR: Marvel Studios Talking With Javier Bardem For A Role?

Another tidbit of rumors coming out of MarvelCinematicUniverse's Facebook page is hinting that Marvel wants Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Bond 23) for a role. It's interesting since his sheadule has somewhat opened up since Dark Tower has gone on hold. Some of the assumed roles include Doctor Strange and his nemesis Baron Mordo.

Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) has also been rumored for Strange. Guillermo del Toro had been vocal on directing the film but went on to fill his plate taking on other large projects. There is currently a script being shopped around to other directors to move the project forward. It's possible the film wouldn't need to start production until 2013 if it is indeed one of the unnamed 2014 films.

Scorsese, DiCaprio & Monahan Re-Teaming For Gambler Remake

Deadline reports that the dynamic group of director Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio and writer William Monahan who worked on The Departed will work together again. The project is a remake of the classic 1974 James Caan film The Gambler. Where a college professor's gambling addiction slowly corrupts him and forces him deeper into debt with sharks. Martin's next film is the long in development Silence but has a slew of other projects are also in works as well. They include the hitman drama The Irishman with Robert DeNiro and The Wolf of Wallstreet with DiCaprio.

Disney/Marvel Studios Announces Two Untitled Movies For 2014

HollywoodReporter says that Disney and Marvel Studios have announced their release dates for 2014. The two dates slated include May 16th and June 27th but it's unknown which characters these films will focus on. The site assumes the dates could be for Captain America 2 and Doctor Strange.

The latter recently has it's first draft completed by Conan The Barbarian (2011) screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheime. There has also been some actors linked to the role including Johnny Depp and Patrick Dempsey. Benedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), who is best known for his role as a contemporary Sherlock Holmes on Steven Moffat's BBC series is rumored to be testing for a major role at Marvel. I wouldn't be shocked if Benedict had been contacted for the role of Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange (Doctor Strange). He's a rising star and a film like this could be many being offered to him at this point. The project has been talked about in great length by Kevin Feige and was even reference in Thor. Strange's amulet made an appearance in the film as one of the many relics of Odin's vault. It's possible that the other projects which include Ant-Man, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Black Widow, SHIELD and Hawkeye could also be on deck.

Marti Noxon Wants To Write Wonder Woman

Screenwriter Marti Noxon (Buffy, Fright Night, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies) talked to FearNet about her dream project which would be Wonder Woman. Currently the only other name contending for the film is writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson) who wants Ryan Gosling for a role and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) for Princess Diana. Apparently Nicolas' involvement will be factored on if Warner Bros. is happy with Logan's Run. I'm glad to hear more and more talk of a serious take on the female hero. Rather than rehashing the terrible sexist attributes of the television show.

"I would love to. To be honest - as scary as it is - part of me wishes I could take a crack at Wonder Woman. There was a moment where it looked like I might get involved in the TV version. She is one of the few in the canon that hasn't been exploited. There are reasons for that; there is stuff in her mythology that are really silly. The costume - she's in a star-spangled bathing suit! And she uses a "lasso of truth" and rides around in an invisible plane. But they don't have to be that way. I definitely have a point of view about that. If I could do it, and nobody could "yell at me"... if the internet wasn't poised to explode in hate, no matter what you did, I would be out there, really pushing for it"

Captain America Screenwriters Talk Sequel

Now that Captain America is becoming an overall success there is movement on the sequel. Joe Johnston has said he'd like to do Captain America 2 but has yet to sign on officially. The first film's screenwriters Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely talk (via GeekTyrant) about the angles they'd like to see happen.

We certainly want at least a portion of the '40's, I think. The span of [Captain America: The First Avenger] is about two or three years, and there’s a few times in the film where you jump four months ahead, you jump six months ahead. So we did that with the intention of saying, ‘Okay, there are certainly unseen adventures that Captain America went on in that period that if we want to, we can go back and explore later.

It might be doing a disservice not to address the present day Cap, particularly because so much of the comic book run right now is present day Cap – that ‘man out of time’ is the icon. The Captain America that most people know is really from kind of the reboot, when Stan Lee brought him back in '63 and '64, frozen from a block of ice. So his biggest personality trait is that he's this man out of time, and for us, we didn't have the opportunity [to explore that]. This was a guy in the RIGHT time.

Cap's present day love interest Sharon Carter and his partner Falcon have also been named as possible additions for the sequel. It also doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities that the Winter Soldier storyline could be explored as well.

I want both of them! Sharon is meaty, almost to a point where you get a little uncomfortable because her relation to Peggy has shifted over the years, as time has passed. She's the sister, she's the cousin, she's the niece. You have to walk a fine line there because it does seem like you're dating your girlfriend's daughter. Falcon is awesome. We can't play with time so much to have Cap go back to Harlem in the '70's and clean up the streets, but it would be awesome to go straight up, like, 'Shaft' with Cap and the Falcon.

RUMOR: Donnie Yen Joining Expendables 2?

TwitchFilm is reporting that there is a chance that we could see Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen make an appearance in Expendables 2. Yen is primarily known for his stellar work in both Hong Kong and Chinese action cinema. He also has had a few films alongside Jet Li so I wouldn't be shocked to see their characters cross paths in the film if he decides to take an offer.

Ridley Scott Set To Direct Blade Runner Prequel/Seuqel

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott has made a deal with Alcon Entertainment to produce and direct a new Blade Runner film. The film has been toted as being a prequel or sequel depending on the angle they finally agree on. Harrison Ford has been ruled out but it's expected to be ready for around 2014 with Warner Bros. distributing.

I don't find this too surprising as Ridley came to rescue of the Alien prequel (Prometheus) when Fox turned down his suggested director. Ridley must know now that he should be involved in these projects so that his original work doesn't get tarnished in the process. I do hope that they take the angle of a prequel and show the off-world colonies, wars and the replicant rebellion.

HBO's Brian Kirk In Talks To Direct Thor 2, Coming July 26th 2013

ShowBlitz reports that Marvel Studios is currently in talks with Game Of Thrones/Boardwalk Empire director Brian Kirk to take on Thor 2. The sequel is set to be released on July 26th 2013.

It's not surprising Kirk is getting film offers since both Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire have blown up thanks to his work directing several of the first season's episodes. While I believe Kenneth Branagh did an excellent job on the first film I didn't outright love it. New blood seems like a good move along with hiring Shane Black for Iron Man 3 coming out the same year. It's expected the second film will be entirely set in the cosmic world focusing on a larger cast of Asgardians and mystical creatures/foes. Which seems to sort of parallel Thrones slightly, so it could very well turn out for the better.
